Cathedral City — Police say they have yet to determine a motive in a shooting that left two dead and one injured on Thursday at a Cathedral City rental car agency.

A Palm Desert man shot two of his business partners — killing one — before shooting and killing himself, officials said.

“It was just a business meeting, and I can't say any more than that,” said Luxury Manager Barry Curtis, who was not at the scene on Thursday.

Friday morning, the Riverside County Coroner's Office said the gunman was a 53-year-old Palm Desert man, and the man who was fatally shot was a 49-year-old Northridge resident.

Investigators are still not releasing the names of the victims or the gunman. Those in the meeting were described as middle-aged men, and at least two were from the Los Angeles area, Cathedral City police Lt. Glen Haas said.

Three of the four men were in the business's showroom when, for unknown reasons, one left the showroom and retrieved a handgun from another room, returned, and shot one of his colleagues at point-blank range, Haas said.

The gunman then shot a second man twice before shooting himself in his head.

“We've ruled out there's an outstanding suspect,” Haas said.

The fourth man and a passer-by, who police said witnessed the incident from outside the building, called authorities.

Geary Powell, director of service for Mike Thompson's RV Super Stores, was working next door when armed police arrived at the scene.

He said he told his employees to get inside.

“I didn't know what was going on, and if a weapon was fired, I didn't want anyone else shot,” Powell added.

Paramedics could be seen treating one of the victims as he lay on the floor of the Luxury Rent-A-Car showroom.

That man remains hospitalized at Desert Regional Medical Center. His condition was not available Thursday night.

Most business owners said they didn't know anything was happening until police arrived.

“We heard the sirens as four customers were coming in. One of the (customers) went to go look to see what was happening and came back and said people were dead,” said Joel Jasso, an employee at Pool & Electrical Products on Commercial Road.

Employees of Enterprise Rent-A-Car next door to Luxury Rent-A-Car said a man ran into their business saying there had been a shooting and asked employees to call 911.

Justin Hoffman, an Enterprise management trainee, said he had not arrived at work by that time.

However, he said he was driving on Palm Canyon Drive at about 10:35 a.m. and saw the shooting scene.

“One of the big floor-to-ceiling windows had a bullet hole in it and (had) shattered,” he said. “I could see someone just lying on the ground.”

Curtis, a manager at Luxury Rent-A-Car, said two employees were at the business Thursday morning and that he was away from the office at the time of the shooting.

“I was out on the road in Palm Springs,” he said. “I was out on business.”

Curtis initially said he had few details about the shooting, and when reached later Thursday afternoon said police had asked him not to comment further on the shooting.

People who believed they may have been family or friends of the victims flocked to the scene throughout the morning.

They all declined to comment.

After the shooting, police closed down a portion of Palm Canyon Drive.

One westbound lane in front of the business remained closed for much of the day as police investigated.

Desert Sun reporters Colin Atagi, Brian Indrelunas and Victor Morales contributed to this report.
