Man killed in Thursday crash on I-10 identified

Staff and wire reports • October 30, 2009

The Riverside County Coroner's Office has released the name of a man killed in a crash early Thursday on Interstate 10 near Banning.

The office said Thursday night the man was Dominic Becerra, a 26-year-old Beaumont resident.

Becerra was the front-seat passenger in a sedan driven by another Beaumont man, who was arrested on suspicion of vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence.

Robert J. Martinez, 26, was driving at about 80 or 90 mph early Thursday morning as he came upon the construction zone near the Fields Road exit between Cabazon and Banning, according to the California Highway Patrol. The CHP said he was driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Martinez was driving behind a big rig that had slowed to about 15 mph because of the construction zone. Police said Martinez failed to slow down and hit the left rear corner of the truck, which tore into his car, fatally injuring Becerra.

Police believe neither man was wearing a seat belt, said Officer Scott Beauchene, a CHP spokesman.

After hitting the truck, Martinez's car spun into a neighboring lane, where it was hit by a pickup truck.

The drivers of both trucks were uninjured, the CHP said. Martinez received moderate injuries and was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
