His fans, and they are a legion, call him “Enge.” Back in the day, they'd swoon, throw hotel room keys and undergarments at his feet on stage.
For 40 years, Engelbert Humperdinck has enjoyed a career that any performer would love to have.
He's played the valley several times over the past decade, and he's returning for an 8 p.m. show Saturday at Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella.
We caught up with Humperdinck in his Las Vegas dressing room during a sound check for his show last Friday.
“I thought I'd give you a call now,” he said.
Perhaps it's his low-key personality, but he did sound just a bit tired on the phone.
“I just did a European tour this summer,” he said. “Twenty-one shows in 30 days.”
A grueling schedule for a younger man, but “it wasn't too bad,” Humperdinck said. “You just have to take care of yourself. The problem is all the flying.”
Humperdinck, who is celebrating the last 40 years of his career with two new discs (available on his Web site, engelbert.com), calls this his “Legacy of Love” tour after his new album.
“This is my life,” he said of the album “Legacy of Love,” which features new recordings of his greatest hits.
Humperdinck has sold 150 million albums worldwide, including 64 gold and 24 platinum.
“The challenge was to see if I could (sing) the songs as well, if not better, than when I originally recorded them,” he said.
In a lot of ways, “it was much easier this time around. I'm very proud of the way it's turned out.”
In addition to hits like “After The Lovin'” and “Release Me,” Humperdinck included his version of “My Way,” “Over the Rainbow” and “Endlessly.”
“I loved working with Paul Anka and David Foster, who is the biggest name in recording today,” he added.
Then there's Humperdinck's “Taste of Country” album featuring covers of the Eagles “Desperado” and “Best of My Love;” Johnny Nash's “I Can See Clearly Now;” John Denver's “Sunshine On My Shoulders” and Nilsson's “Everybody's Talking.”
Humperdinck, who, in addition to touring and recording, is active with several charities in the U.K. and in the U.S., said he has no plans to retire.
Or slow down.
“There are always so many beautiful surprises in my life,” he said. “I really can't wait to see what comes next.”
