Sun City Shadow Hills hosts green tech fair

ALDRICH M. TAN • The Desert Sun • October 25, 2009

Sun City Shadow Hills held its first green technology fair on Saturday in the gated housing community's Montecito Clubhouse.

Twelve vendors from across Southern California brought a variety of environmental-friendly products for show and sale, such as solar-powered attic fans.

“We thought it would be great to show our residents how to live an eco-friendly lifestyle,” Shadow Hills lifestyle director Eric Angle said.

A growing number of people are interested in environmental issues, like Shadow Hills resident Ann Gersham.

She said she “recycles everything” and brings her own bags to the grocery store.

“I do whatever I can and I think that if there were more people doing the same thing, it would be helpful,” Gersham said as she looked at a biodegradable cleaner.

Attendance at the fair helps local green businesses, said Stanley Louis, who sells solar water heaters and air conditioners in Palm Desert.

“We live out here,” he said. “We work out here and we provide green services out here.”

Shadow Hills resident Jamie Barnes, 73, said he is interested in green technology, but is skeptical about the cost to install it.

“The payback for some of this technology could be in 12 years,” he said. “I could be dead by then.”
