Investigators have arrested a man suspected of nearly running over a California Highway Patrol officer who was writing a ticket Sunday, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.
Juan Borboa is accused of almost hitting the officer at about 1:40 a.m. on Jackson Street and Avenue 62 in Thermal, when officers responded to a call about a group of vehicles gathered on the road, according to Riverside County sheriff's Deputy Melissa Nieburger.
As the CHP unit arrived, the drivers began to flee, and the CHP unit followed.
The CHP officers then stopped a motorist to issue a citation for a traffic violation.
At that point, another vehicle heading north on the southbound lane of Jackson Street accelerated and drove toward the officer, almost striking the officer, Nieburger said.
The officer responded by firing multiple shots at the vehicle as it sped away, but it is not clear if the shots struck anything.
The driver of that vehicle fled north on Jackson Street, Nieburger said.
There have not been any injuries reported.
Other details on Borboa's arrest have not been provided.
