Sex offender out on bail

Man accused of not disclosing status, being on high school campus without permission

A registered sex offender is out on bail after surrendering to authorities Tuesday following an investigation into his association with Palm Desert High School's girl's softball team.

Investigators don't have evidence that La Quinta resident Ronald Nieto, 50, made inappropriate contact with the students.

He is, however, accused of not disclosing his sex offender status, working with minors as a registered sex offender and being on campus without school officials' permission, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Nieto had been helping his wife, Ashley Nieto, who is the softball team's coach.

In June 1998, Ronald Nieto pleaded guilty to charges of committing lewd acts with a child under 16 and was sentenced to five years probation.

Ashley Nieto was the victim in the crime, authorities said.

Ronald Nieto was 39 years old and his future wife was 14 years old at the time.

Ashley Nieto has reportedly defended her husband for the 1998 incident saying that he never did anything improper. Rather, the allegations of wrongdoing were brought forward by her father.

The Nietos could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
