MURRIETA — Two men were sentenced Friday to 59 years to life in prison and a third to 22 years to life behind bars for kidnapping and gang-raping a young woman in DeLuz and leaving her for dead.
Francisco Silva, 39, of Temecula and Oscar Veloz, 24, of Quail Valley got the lengthier sentences for their roles in the May 25, 2005, attack on the woman, who was 19 at the time.
Temecula resident Benjamin DeLara, who turned 20 on Oct. 8, was acquitted of attempted murder and thus faced less time.
The defendants had separate juries, and each convicted the defendants of kidnapping to commit rape, rape, and sodomy and oral copulation in concert.
The older men were also convicted of attempted murder, carjacking and arson, but were acquitted of torture.
DeLara was acquitted of assault with a deadly weapon, auto theft and torture counts.
According to Deputy District Attorney Jess Walsh, the jury that decided DeLara's fate believed he was not completely aware of what the older men were planning to do to the victim.
The woman, whose name was withheld, testified that the three offered to show her the way to the home of a mutual friend in Temecula, but instead led her to a secluded spot. While she was composing a text message to a friend, one of them punched her in the face, then all three raped and robbed her and set her car on fire, she said.
The woman said DeLara took her hand and led her away from the car fire, but that the three took her to another secluded spot in DeLuz, where they raped her again, and Silva stabbed her 22 times with a knife.
She said they left her for dead, but she crawled down a mountainside to a road, where a passing motorist spotted her and took her to a hospital.
