City officials plan to gather at Jalisco’s at 1605 Sixth Street in downtown Coachella, starting at 8 p.m. to monitor the results of today’s vote on Measure M.
The ballot measure asks Coachella voters to support a 5 percent Utility Users Tax that would be added to all utility bills including: telecommunications, video and cable, electricity, gas, water, sewer and garbage.
The measure would also create a five-member independent Citizens Oversight Committee that would annually review the revenue and expenditures of the tax.
If approved the tax would provide regular income for the city to pay for city services.
The money generated from the tax could not be raided by the state.
Without immediate approval of the tax, city officials say the city would face “serious” financial shortfalls that would require the reduction of city services.
