The donation of a City fire engine to the College of the Desert's Public Safety Academy, the acceptance of a $16,000 state grant for a police department seat belt and child safety seat compliance project -- and consideration of a proposed ordinance related to the recycling of debris from construction sites will be some of the priority issues up for discussion at Wednesday night's Palm Springs City Council meeting.
As a result of the City's purchase of two new 2009 Pierce Quantum fire engines, the Council will consider a recommendation by the fire chief to donate a surplus fire engine to the College of the Desert Public Safety Academy's Roy Wilson Fire Training Center -- which will be officially dedicated at special ceremony on Nov. 14 in Thousand Palms.
As Palm Springs continues on its path to becoming a more sustainable community, the Council will also consider a proposed ordinance requiring a minimum of 75 percent of debris from construction and demolition projects to be diverted from land filling through recycling, reuse, and salvage. The City of Indio recently approved a similar ordinance and other cities like Rancho Mirage, La Quinta and Indian Wells have also addressed construction and demolition diversion.
In addition, the Council will accept a $16,000 state grant for the police department to implement seat belt and child safety seat compliance patrols throughout Palm Springs in 2009-2010.
Wednesday night's Palm Springs City Council meeting is slated for 6 p.m. in the Council Chamber, 3200 E. Tahquitz Canyon Way. You can also watch it live on Palm Springs Community Television, Channel 17 and on Time/Warner Cable 121 -- or view it online by visiting the City's Web site at www.palmspringsca.gov and clicking on Government and then Palm Springs Community Television.
