Country club awards $5,000 scholarship

Jose R. Avalos, a student at the Palm Desert Campus of California State University, San Bernardino, has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Ironwood Country Club Employee Scholarship Fund — a fund managed by the Desert Community Foundation.

The award comes from the foundation's Country Club Fund, which has awarded more than $600,000 to more than 120 Coachella Valley students during 2009-2010.

Avalos lives in Palm Desert and is majoring in business administration. He qualified for the scholarship because his mother works at Ironwood. Recipients must either work there or have an immediate family member who does.

Speech students showcase talents

Speech students at College of the Desert will participate in a speech showcase from 4 to 5 p.m. Nov. 17 in the Pollock Theatre on the campus.

The event will feature student performances, including prose, storytelling, informative, persuasion, impromptu, demonstration and other platform events.
