To honor military veterans and to recognize those who continue to serve, Palm Desert will host a Veterans Day Celebration Nov. 11 at Freedom Park.

The ceremony is scheduled at 11 a.m. with a performance by the Palm Desert High School Band, followed by welcoming remarks and the posting of the United States and California flags.

The invocation will be given by Sam Hook, president and chief executive officer of FIND food bank and a former Army and Army National Guard chaplain.

Lt. Col. Alfredo A. Sandoval, U.S. Air Force Reserve, will be the keynote speaker.

There also will be patriotic musical tribute to service members by the Palm Desert High School Band.

Limited seating will be provided, but people are encouraged to bring out their portable chairs and enjoy the event, said Kristy Kneiding marketing manager for Palm Desert.

“It's a wonderful opportunity to remember those who have died, been wounded and spent time fighting for out freedom,” said Palm Desert Councilman Dick Kelly. “And it's an ideal location in Freedom Park. The whole park is dedicated to those who have fought for our freedom.”

Men and women who have served the country in all military capacities must be honored, Kelly said.

“Many many young men spent the most important years of their lives, when they could be getting an education or starting their lives, serving,” Kelly said. “We have to recognize all of them.”
