Fight may have led to shooting

Desert Sun staff • November 6, 2009

Derek Nigel Lopez, 31, is suspected of trying to kill a Cathedral City man on June 20, 2008, according to the Riverside County District Attorney's Office.

Lopez is this week's featured fugitive on Riverside County's Most Wanted list.

The victim reported being outside his home when he heard gunshots and felt several small, sharp cuts against his skin, officials said.

Stucco fragments knocked from the home by the gunshots hit the victim, leaving him with minor injuries, according to the district attorney's office.

Witnesses identified the shooter as Lopez, who lived across the street, officials said.

Investigators reported the victim and Lopez's father-in-law had a fight days before, and that dispute may have been the motive for the shooting.

A warrant was issued for Lopez's arrest on July 17, 2008.

Lopez was added to the most wanted list Nov. 20, 2008.

He remains at large and is wanted on charges of attempted murder, officials said.

Jorge Perez

A fight during a soccer game may have led to a stabbing that nearly killed a man seven years ago, according to investigators.

Jorge Perez, 34, was identified as the suspect in the Jan. 20, 2002, attack, according to the district attorney's office.

The victim, Amado Soto, was using a restroom at Demuth Park in Palm Springs when Perez stabbed him several times, according to officials.

Emergency personnel took Soto to Desert Regional Medical Center, where he recovered from his injuries.

Investigators said the stabbing may have occurred because of an earlier fight that happened in Cathedral City between the suspect and victim.

An arrest warrant was issued for Perez on Jan. 22, 2008.

Jesus Avilez Gamez

The search continues for a man who is suspected of shooting one of his friends.

Jesus Gamez, a 28-year-old suspected gang member, is wanted in connection with a June 26 shooting in Thermal, according to the district attorney's office.

He and the victim were leaving a market when Gamez reportedly turned down a dirt road and parked next to a reservoir.

A short time later, Gamez pulled out a handgun and demanded the victim hand over his money, officials said.

The victim reportedly gave him his wallet, and Gamez opened fire, shooting the man in the stomach, according to the district attorney's office. The victim survived the shooting.

Gamez remains at large and is wanted on charges of attempted murder.

Anyone with information on any of these suspects may call Crime Stoppers at 341-STOP (7867).
