An 18-year-old man shot by Desert Hot Springs police after allegedly attacking officers must stand trial on assault charges, a judge ruled Friday.
Travis Jonsrud, who was shot in the head, chest and leg on Feb. 25, is charged with two counts of assault by means of force likely to produce great bodily injury on a peace officer.
Following a nearly two-hour preliminary hearing in Palm Springs, Riverside County Superior Court Stephen A. Sillman ruled there was enough evidence for the case to proceed to trial.
The judge ruled that Jonsrud could remain out of custody on $25,000 bail, and ordered him to return to court on Nov. 20 for a arraignment.
Officers encountered Jonsrud walking through traffic after getting into a fender-bender the night of Feb. 25 near Palm Drive and Hacienda Avenue, according to a declaration in support of an arrest warrant.
Responding officers ordered Jonsrud to sit down and hand over a cell phone he was holding, but he jumped up without warning and attacked the officers, according to Detective Kenneth Patterson, who prepared the declaration.
Jonsrud allegedly told an officer he was “under the influence of PCP,” Patterson wrote.
Three other officers tried to take Jonsrud into custody, twice using a stun gun, but he continued to beat the officers and pushed one of them with “superhuman” strength, according to Patterson.
The young man rushed toward one of the officers who, “fearing for his life and that of his officers, discharged his weapon, striking Jonsrud unknown times,” Patterson wrote. Another officer also fired on Jonsrud.
The officers handcuffed the wounded suspect, who was taken to Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs.
One of the officers was treated for bruises to his head and face.
Dale Galipo, the suspect's attorney, has said Jonsrud was not on the hallucinogenic drug PCP, as officers have alleged.
