LQ volleyball pulls off epic comeback in win

MORENO VALLEY — Simone Henderson had 14 kills and seven blocks, Summer Aleman had 34 assists, Jamey Braxton had 18 digs and one ace and Ali Tuller had 24 digs as the Blackhawks rallied to defeat Valley View on the road in the first round of the CIF playoffs.


Despite losing the first two games 25-14, 25-21, La Quinta won the next three by scores of 25-12, 25-20, 15-13.

Despite having to challenge her team, Coach Ronda Sommaripa was still proud of their efforts.

“I told them ‘Tell me you want to be here. Do you guys realize where we are?' They said yes and I told them to show me and they did. I'm very proud of them. We're looking forward to the next round,” Sommaripa said.

Also for La Quinta, Natalie Wilson had seven aces.

La Quinta (11-5) will face Los Altos on Thursday at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Girls' volleyball

DHS 3, La Puente 1: The Golden Eagles overcame a loss in Game 3 to open the CIF Division IV-A playoffs with a road victory.

DHS won 25-15, 25-13, 17-25, 25-17.

“We hit a bump in the third game, when (La Puente) came back and started hitting the ball,” Golden Eagles coach Heather Yarbrough said. “But we stepped it up on defense in Game 4. It seemed like all of our digs came in that fourth game.”

Vanessa Burgos had six aces, 22 assists and nine digs for the Golden Eagles. Mariela Ortega added three aces, nine kills and nine digs.

Chyann Saban and Sierra Tarrant each had 16 digs for the Golden Eagles.

Desert Hot Springs (13-4) plays Thursday at home against Notre Dame.

XAVIER PREP 3, CAL LUTHERAN 1: Molly McNulty had 22 assists and Brittney Overgaag had 19 digs as the Saints earned a victory at home in the first round of the CIF playoffs, 25-22, 22-25, 25-10, 25-19.

Also for Xavier Prep, Jessica Bolanos had 15 assists and Adrian Tiedeman had 12 kills.

“The girls gave it all they had and in the end they pulled through,” said coach Tammi Cavender. “We're excited for the next, for a young program like us. It's great for us to advance to the next round.”

Xavier Prep (14-2) plays Thursday at 7 p.m. against Heritage at a site to be determined.


DESERT CHRISTIAN 3, BASSETT 0: Jackie Quintero had 11 kills, Stephanie Gagnon had 10 kills and Abby Ostendorff had six aces as the Conquerors were winners in a first round CIF home playoff game, 25-17, 25-11, 25-15.

Coach Stu Rowland was proud of the way his team was able to win despite being shorthanded.

“Both teams played very well. We were without our starting middle blocker Kiara Gamble, who was out sick and the team rallied around it and pulled out the victory and we look forward to the second round.” Rowland said.

Desert Christian (17-3) will face the Alverna/Vasquez winner Thursday at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

YUCCA VALLEY 3, DESERT CHAPEL 0: Lindsay Sullivan had nine kills, Ali Ratkowiak had eight kills, Rebecca Jennings had 25 assists and Morgan Shippey had six kills as the Trojans earned a home victory in the first round of the CIF playoffs, 25-8, 25-11, 25-6.

Coach Pam Naylor was proud of her team's victory.

“I was obviously pleased with the outcome of the game but I was more pleased with the fact that I was able to play everyone on my roster.”

Yucca Valley (10-4) will face the Gladstone/Rosamond winner Thursday at7 p.m. at a site to be determined.

Water polo

Arlington 14, La Quinta 7: The Blackhawks lost their playoff opener on the road against the No. 2 seed in the Inland Valley League.

Arlington moves on to play Bonita on Thursday.

Antelope Valley 7, College of the Desert 1: The Roadrunners ended a winless season Tuesday with a road loss in Antelope Valley. COD (0-10-1) had its only goal scored by Olympic Contreras.
