Nuclear cap scheduled to move through valley tonight

Desert Sun Staff Report • November 12, 2009

Drivers planning to travel along Interstate 10 and some Palm Springs streets overnight may want to consider alternate routes.

A 150-ton nuclear head is expected to move through the Coachella Valley between 10 p.m. today and 2 a.m. Friday, according to a Palm Springs city press release.

Bigge Crane and Rigging plans to move the massive equipment to Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station near Phoenix, officials say.

The head will travel into the valley on the wrong side of Interstate 10 to accommodate the oversized load, then navigate Highway 111 into Palm Springs. From there it will take Racquet Club Road, Farrell Drive, Vista Chino and Gene Autry Trail before returning to I-10.

It’s the second of three heads that will make their way to the power plant.

Neither is radioactive nor harmful, said Betty Dayyo, spokeswoman for Arizona Public Service, the largest of seven co-owners of the Palo Verde plant.

The California Highway Patrol's Border Division commercial enforcement will escort the transport, said Sgt. Dave Dreher of CHP.

The transport is expected to be extremely slow, and the dates when it's expected to pass through the valley could change, Dreher said.

"A load like that we figure about 30 minutes per intersection," he said.
