Rajahs quell Lions' roar, ready to ring Bell

Bill Byron • bill.byron@thedesertsun.com • November 13, 2009

The Indio High football team won its second game of the year last week when it beat Cathedral City, 29-21.

Tonight, the Rajahs play in their final game of the season, the Bell Game against rival Coachella Valley. This week Indio head coach James Gordon spoke with The Indio Sun about last week's victory and tonight's rivalry matchup.

QUESTION: It must have been nice to finally get another win.

ANSWER: It was really, really good to finally get back in that winner's column.

Did you expect the game to be that close, going into double overtime and all?

I didn't expect a double overtime game. I expected it to be a good game, and I told our kids we needed to be fundamentally sound.

How are you approaching the rivalry game against CV this week?

Exactly the same way: We need to be fundamentally sound and disciplined and play relentless(ly). We're a football team learning how to win, and that doesn't come from just putting players on the field and hoping they perform.

You've got running back Dominic Mata back from injury now, how much does that help?

I think it does, it helps us out tremendously with morale. Going into the season, the guys were looking to start where we left off and when we lost Mata, that hurt our psyche.

Who are you most concerned about on the Arabs' team?

Of course their go-to guy is (running back Oliver) Inzunza, and I'm sure he'll be back. We have to scheme for him, he's a solid football player. And (Gilbert Rios) is a good scatback, and their fullback (Alex Arechiga) runs the ball pretty hard.
