Man organizes Jubilee garage sale

ALDRICH M. TAN • aldrich.tan@indiosun.com • November 13, 2009

Darryl Mohr considers himself “a committee of one.”

Four years ago, he convinced the Heritage Palms Country Club's board that having garage sales for the gated community was a good idea.

“People clean out items that they no longer use or need rather than let it build up at their home,” he said. “Someone can use it.”

The annual Jubilee event will be open to the public this weekend with at least 100 residences selling items out of their garages.

Getting things taken care of is something that a lifelong entrepreneur does, said the 72-year-old Mohr.

He grew up in San Francisco and owned three companies during a period of 20 years: a camera film distributor called Mohr Microfilm, an engineering and architectural equipment dealership called LMX, and an office maintenance company called BMC.

Mohr retired in 1995 to Lake Wildwood, a gated community in Nevada City. He founded the Lake Wildwood Yacht Club in 1998. In April 2003, he moved to the desert at the suggestion of a friend.

“He was right most of the time because I have a real tough time with heat,” Mohr said.

Mohr continued to be involved at Heritage Palms. Four years ago, he acted as the go-between with the original developer Lennar to get the property's deed for the homeowners association.

He is now working on getting his real estate license so he can be a mortgage broker for seniors.
