A wheelchair-using Coachella man convicted of fatally stabbing a friend should be sentenced to 23 years in prison, a prosecutor said Friday.

Gilbert Gonzalez Garcia, 42, of Coachella, was scheduled to be sentenced on Friday, but the hearing was delayed because Garcia’s attorney was ill.
Riverside County Superior Court Judge John J. Ryan rescheduled the sentencing for Nov. 7.
Garcia is being held at the Robert Presley Detention Center in lieu of $1 million bail.
Prosecutor Otis Sterling said he will ask that Garcia serve the maximum sentence for his voluntary manslaughter conviction.
Garcia, who has been forced to use a wheelchair since an earlier shooting, was convicted of stabbing Coachella resident Richard Ramirez, 36, to death July 18, 2006, outside Garcia’s home on Oasis Palm Avenue in Coachella, according to court records.
Sterling said the men began fighting over a bike that belonged to Garcia’s son and that Garcia had loaned to Ramirez, Sterling said.
“Garcia was mad because it was not returned on time,” Sterling said.
“Garcia unexpectedly pulled out a knife and started stabbing.”
