Blackhawks, Aztecs advance in tennis

The La Quinta and Palm Desert high school girls tennis teams both advanced to the quarterfinals of the CIF Division II playoffs Saturday.

La Quinta 15, Villa park 3: The Blackhawks received sweeps from all three of their singles players in a match played in smoky conditions due to fires.

Pam Montez (6-0, 6-0, 6-0), Alexa Lee (6-0, 6-1, 6-0) and Jaci West (6-1, 6-2, 6-1) swept all nine singles sets.

In doubles, Tatum Kanter and Natalie Graham swept 6-1, 6-4, 6-2, while Megan Lester and Catherine Dickerson won 6-4, 6-2. Tiffany Kanter and Ana Al-Sarabi also added a 6-3 winning set.

Despite the fires nearby, the Blackhawks managed to stay focused throughout the duration of the match.

“It was tough to play because we were so close to the fires and it was really windy, but our team was able to put that aside and play good tennis,” Lee said.

With the victory, La Quinta will face Dos Pueblos on Tuesday in a site to be determined by coin toss.

Head coach Michael Gates was satisfied with the victory,.

“It was a rough day with the fires, but the girls took care of business,” Gates said.

Palm desert 10, Murrietta Valley 8: Desirae Krawczyk and Kristin Eggleston won the final two matches to help the Aztecs defeat Murrieta Valley.

Krawczyk concluded the day winning 6-2, 6-0, 7-6. Eggleston won two sets (6-2, 6-4).

“It was really nerve racking, but we fought through it and it was a team effort all the way around,” Eggleston said. “The match showed us how tough it will be the rest of the way and that we really need to bring our best.”

In doubles, Morgan McIntosh and Haley Perrotte won 6-1, 6-2, while Nikki Suarez and Alexa McDonald won 6-2, 6-2. Grace Funk and Amber Stuhlmann added the final winning set.

Palm Desert will face either Arcadia or Mayfield on Tuesday in a site to be determined by coin toss.

Football

Desert Hot Springs 28, Big Bear 27: Desert Hot Springs completed two fourth-down passes on its game-winning drive, including a 10-yard touchdown with 40 seconds remaining, en route to the season-ending victory.

Quarterback Josh Ceceña found Leo Martinez for the winning score on fourth-and-goal from the 10-yard line.

Earlier in the drive, Desert Hot Springs completed a 60-yard flea-flicker pass to Jacob Armijo on fourth down.

“This makes the season so much better to end it on a note like this,” DHS coach Kevin Hennessee said. “We were finally able to put together four quarters of football, which I knew the kids were capable of. The kids believed and played hard.”

Golden Eagles rusher Johnathan Fleeks gained 202 yards rushing on 37 carries.

Fleeks also had three touchdowns on runs of 10, 5 and 8 yards.

Cecena completed 4-of-8 passes for 70 yards.

The Golden Eagles' defense forced four fumbles and held Big Bear on its final possession.

Big Bear drove to the 40-yard line but couldn't get any closer before time ran out.

Desert Hot Springs, which won for the first time in school history at Big Bear, ended the season at 4-6.

Cross country

Indio at CIF: Indio placed ninth out of 14 teams in the Division II CIF race at Mt. SAC in Walnut.

The top-four teams advanced to the finals.

The Rajah boys were led by Alejandro Cortez (16:47) in 29th place, followed by Elias Cota (17:16) 47th, Justo Rodriguez (17:55) 69th, Juan Espino (17:59) 72nd, Raul Mancillas (18:34) 84th, Luis Mejia (19:44) 94th and Jesus Curiel (20:37) 99th.

The Rajah girls placed 13th out of 17 teams and failed to advance. They were led by Melina Hernandez (21:22) in 48th, followed by Mariela Salazar (21:22) 49th, Celia Tavarez (23:12) 88th, Sheyla Escalante (23:56) 104th, Stephanie Villalobos (24:20) 106th, Mary Sioson (24:42) 110th and Lizette Bojorquez (26:29) 121st.

La Quinta at CIF: The Blackhawks girls took ninth out of 14 teams in the CIF meet at Mt. SAC.

Samantha Dougherty led La Quinta in 31st (13:34) on the 2.1-mile course that was shortened because of wildfires. Hayley Musashi was 45th (14:07), followed by Tisa Barrios-Wilson in 46th (14:07), Emily Ziomek in 60th (14:50) and Breah Stewart in 70th (15:16).

The boys team finished 16th overall and was led by Evan Dougherty in 96th (12:19), followed by Ben Pineda 100th (12:33), Cameron Matthew 105th (12:42), Luis Alonzo 107th (12:45), Dillon Umayam 108th (12:47), Daniel Norton 110th (12:56) and Jorge Ceja 111th (12:57).

Boys coach Paul Camer said he. “was proud that they finally got to CIF as a team,” and that because their junior varsity team took second in DVL, “the future looks good for us.”

Desert Christian at CIF: Conqueror Michael Sorensen finished 11th with a time of 11:53 to conclude the teams season. Desert Christian coach Don Curci said Sorensen “had a great season.”

Xavier Prep at CIF: Karina Castaneda (13:45) finished fifth overall qualifying for CIF finals at Mt. SAC.

“Karina did a tremendous job and has a great chance at moving on to state,” coach Aron Lyons said.

The girls team finished 11th out of 15 teams.

Castaneda was followed by Alyssa Kueneman in 58th (16:14), Gabby Baez 73rd (17:23), Mayra Esparza 74th (17:24) and Christina Solitaria 75th (17:25).

The boys team finished eighth out of 11 teams.

Will Tingle led the boys finishing 30th (12:35), followed by Stephen Perez at 38th (12:57) and Tommy Paz 58th (14:19).

Men's basketball

College of the desert 91, redwoods 76: Up 30-25 at halftime, the Roadrunners went on a 24-5 run in the second half to beat Redwoods.

Deonte Taylor led COD with 24 points.

Leighton Matthews had a double-double (13 points, 10 rebounds) while Yoram Webb finished with six points and 10 rebounds. Raul Servin stood out defensively.

College of the Desert (4-1) travels to Citrus College (No. 1 team in California) on Friday.
