Amateur flying high after timely ace at Bob Hope Classic

Bill Byron • The Desert Sun • January 22, 2009

La Quinta — Ever wondered how much it costs to have a private jet at your beck and call?

Well, wonder no more, thanks to Andy Goldfarb, who was the first amateur at the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic this year to sink a hole-in-one and win the tournament prize for the feat — a $50,000 credit toward flight time with Sentient Jet, a private aviation service based in Weymouth, Mass.

Actually, the prize was a $100,000 credit, but it is split with Desert Classic Charities, the chief beneficiary of the Bob Hope Chrysler Classic.

“Whatever it is is fine, if I had to donate it all to the charities, that would be fine,” said Goldfarb, a 61-year-old retired electronics manufacturer.

Goldfarb, a Los Angeles resident who is a member of The Quarry in La Quinta, aced the 156-yard, par-3 15th hole on the Palmer Course at PGA West with a 51-degree-loft sand wedge.

“I mis-hit it and it bounced off right of the green, pin high, and rolled downhill and into the hole,” Goldfarb said of his third ace ever. “It was sheer luck — the other two I holed have been really good shots, solid shots.”

He finished the day with an 88.

“He hit a pretty good-sized hook and it landed on the side of the green there,” said PGA Tour pro Wes Short Jr., who played in Goldfarb's group. “It kicked toward the hole and rolled right in — it was pretty amazing.”

So how much does it cost to rent a private jet?

The Sentient Jet Web site lists the cost for a round-trip flight with its smallest jet — not including tax — at $2,750 per hour — and a whopping $11,950 an hour for its largest jet, with “preferred service.”

Hopefully, for Goldfarb's sake, Sentient will be willing to waive its minimum deposit for membership — a mere $100,000.
