INDIAN WELLS — Mardy Fish jumped on Andy Roddick's back after the two came from behind to win a boisterous doubles final.
Roddick was more than happy to oblige.
“It was only fair,” Roddick said. “He carried me for three sets. I only had to carry him for about five seconds.”
Roddick and Fish came from behind to defeat Max Mirnyi and Andy Ram 3-6, 6-1, (14-12). Saving two match points, the Americans won the 10-point tiebreaker that was played in lieu of a third set.
The winners will split their prize of $225,000.
“I'm married now,” Fish deadpanned, “so I need the money, and he doesn't.”
The two friends pumped up the crowd during the tense tiebreaker.
“We were fired up,” Fish said. “It was an unbelievable atmosphere. Even (Mirnyi and Ram) had fun. It was a great match.”
The Americans dominated the second set to force the deciding tiebreaker. After the two took a 6-4 lead, Roddick raised his arms to incite the crowd. But Mirnyi and Ram fought back, getting a match point after Roddick's second double fault. But Fish didn't relent, firing a forehand return that saved the match.
“I'm glad he was able to step up and be clutch,” Roddick said. “I just rode his coattails today.”
After fighting off Ram and Mirnyi's second match point, Fish secured the team's first match point by hitting a forehand passing shot that clipped the line. Roddick then hit a booming serve for the title.
The two teamed up for their first doubles title together since winning in Houston in 2002. Since Roddick plays doubles sporadically, the two rarely play together, but they have been friends for years.
As for playing together in the future, the two were coy.
“We might as well stop now,” Roddick said.
