INDIAN WELLS — There was a Cinderella run, a match that ended at 2 a.m., an American hopeful and a couple of upsets along the way, and more than 332,000 fans witnessed it all in the Coachella Valley version of March madness.
For the past two weeks of picture-postcard blue skies, warm temperatures and record-setting attendance, the BNP Paribas Open concluded Sunday with the world's No. 1-ranked player, Rafael Nadal, earning the men's singles title for a second time here at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Nadal beat No. 4 Andy Murray, 6-1, 6-2.
On the women's side, Vera Zvonareva became the first woman to win both the singles and doubles titles in this tournament in the same year since Lindsay Davenport in 2000. The 24-year-old Russian beat defending champion Ana Ivanovic 7-6 (5), 6-2 for the singles title.
It was close to perfect for co-chairmen Raymond Moore and Charlie Pasarell.
The tournament smashed attendance records set last year with 332,498 tennis enthusiasts at the two-week event.
There was a new title sponsor, equal prize money for both men and women and an update to the well-manicured grounds around the stadium complete with new jumbo screen, a past winner's monument and larger grandstands.
“Everything — all the gods, all the planets have aligned, and we have had 13 perfect days,'' said Moore. “All in all, I think Charlie and I are absolutely ecstatic at what's happened to this tournament. It seems that the California public have finally embraced this event and actually realized the magnitude of it.”
