RANCHO MIRAGE — Lindsey Wright accomplished a feat this week at the Kraft Nabisco Championship that only one other golfer can claim.
Wright and second-place finisher Cristie Kerr were the only golfers to shoot four rounds under par this week on the Dinah Shore Tournament Course.
Wright, a 29-year-old Australian, was the only contender to mount a serious charge on Sunday outside of the final threesome, shooting a 2-under 70 to finish three strokes behind champion Brittany Lincicome. Although Wright fell short, she was pleased her swing remained steady during the tournament.
“I didn't lose it at all, which was encouraging. I played really great golf, and I'm very, very happy,” said Wright, whose only previous top 10 finish in a major was when she placed fourth at the 2007 McDonald's LPGA Championship.
Wright shot 66 in the final round of that tournament two years ago, and she had that number in mind on Sunday.
“I felt pretty confident I could do the same today,” she said.
Wright didn't falter early, but she had 10 consecutive pars until jump-starting her round on the par-5 11th. Using a new sand wedge she put in her bag this week, she chipped in for eagle from 50 yards, propelling her to 6 under.
“I was pretty stoked,” she said.
With her opportunities for birdies dwindling, Wright saw her last chance to catch the leaders fade on the par-3 17th. After hitting a marvelous 6-iron to within 8 feet, Wright faced a tricky read.
“Ask any player out here,” Wright said. “That's a tough putt, and under these conditions, you really have to hit it soft, and it's just a matter of how much angle you have.”
Wright didn't find the correct line and closed out the tournament with two more pars, earning $105,281 for finishing alone in fourth.
Playing in her fourth Kraft, Wright easily surpassed her best previous finish when she tied for 26th in 2007. Seeking her first victory on tour, Wright has steadily improved since earning her LPGA card for the 2005 season. Wright had her best result last season, finishing third at the Fields Open in Hawaii.
