Mountain rescue unit helps dehydrated Marines

Group from Twentynine Palms were on scheduled hike

Desert Sun staff report • October 16, 2009

The Riverside Mountain Rescue Unit was called out tonight to assist a group of 26 Marines on the Skyline Trail above Palm Springs, after seven became dehydrated.

The group from Twentynine Palms was on a scheduled hike when the seven became dehydrated in an area where it was unsafe for a helicopter to land, said Investigator Matt Diaz of the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

The mountain rescue unit assembled at the Palm Springs Tramway and met the group at 5,300 feet with water for the dehydrated Marines, Diaz said.

The Marines and rescue unit then returned to the Tramway Mountain Station and took the tram back to Palm Springs, he said.
