So you've lost 59-0 — what do you do now?

John Mackovic • Special to The Desert Sun • October 24, 2009

It was 59-0 the worst defeat in the history of the Houston Oilers/Tennessee Titans. The Patriots' Tom Brady tossed five touchdown passes in one quarter to set an NFL record.

Last week I wrote about the Titans and said not to think about replacing the coach, and this week the owner, Bud Adams, says now is not the time to talk about the future of Jeff Fisher. I stand by my opinion about Fisher and his abilities.

So what is going wrong in Nashville? One thing seems certain — the team did not show up last week in Foxboro.

Maybe you have never experienced such a whipping, but I have and it rocks one's soul. If there was any confidence in the players before last Sunday, it surely was gone by nightfall.

In business there might be wholesale firings to clean house for a fresh start, but that is not easily done inside a football operation with upcoming commitments for games on the immediate horizon.

Maybe a sports psychologist might come in to pump up the troops with a motivational talk if anyone would be listening. I hope Fisher and his coaches do not take the “bunker” approach and go completely out of sight.

Circling the wagons sounds neat, but pro football is so public that trying to remain secret at a time like this might well backfire with leaks of information about feelings and changes. Regardless of the situation someone or something must be done to shatter the status quo.

The No. 1 thing to bear in mind with the team is their confidence, or lack thereof. Fisher's coaches need to make this week one of rebuilding confidence with each and every player.

Winning might not be the most important element right now. I know that sounds contrary to everything, but this team needs some small steps of success to get going. My money is still on Fisher.

Odds and ends

No sooner had I walked in the door at the Beer Hunter last week when my friend Lou let me have it. “I have had enough of those throw-back uniforms,” he blurted out. After watching the Broncos for two consecutive weeks in their duds, I must admit the NFL has gone over the line and the fashion cops need to give them a citation.

Jim Zorn, the Washington Redskins coach, learned early this week what it means when a consultant is brought in to have “another set of eyes” on the team. Right after losing to the Chiefs, General Manager Vinny Cerrato asked the coach to give up his play-calling duties. And guess who is now calling the plays? Yes, Sherman Lewis, the new consultant. Please tell me how Sherm can learn all that offense in two weeks time to make better calls than Zorn.

Maybe Josh McDaniels (Denver Broncos) grew up in Canton, Ohio, but he was born in my hometown of Barberton.

Along with Josh and myself who became head coaches in the NFL, Tom Dimitroff was head coach of the Hamilton Tiger Cats of the CFL, Bo Schembechler was the Hall of Fame coach at Michigan, Jack Murphy was head coach at the University of Toledo and Mike Stock became head coach at Eastern Michigan.

That makes six of us from the same hometown of 25,000 people. It's in the water.
