Yesteryear car show to benefit local charities

Southern California's prominent gay- and lesbian-oriented car club rolls into the Coachella Valley today to hold its annual fundraiser for the first time in Palm Springs.

Great Autos of Yesteryear car club, with more than 1,100 members — including more than 300 in the valley — has scheduled its annual benefit classic car show, “Casual Concours,” for 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Indian Canyons Golf Resort, 1097 E. Murray Canyon Drive.

“It's a great sense of camaraderie,” said Andy Linsky of Palm Springs, a member of the nearly 26-year-old club.

Linsky said he owns a collection of European and American cars primarily from the 1960s and '70s.

“So many people I knew were in (the club),” Linsky said. “Since I collect older cars, I thought that would be a great club to join.”

Some 125 exotic, classic and special-interest cars have been registered for the Concours, according to event co-chair Sandy Edelstein.

It will benefit three local charities: Desert Outreach Foundation, Golden Rainbow Senior Center and the Desert AIDS Project, according to a release.

“In the current economic climate, particularly in the state of California where charitable organizations are having such a tough time we're really happy to be able to hold this event and get them some much needed funds,” Edelstein said.

Edelstein said there are gay- and lesbian-oriented car clubs all over world, and many fall under a network of clubs, the Lambda Car Club International.

“Almost every major city or metropolitan area has a gay car club,” Edelstein said.

“We're it in Southern California.”

Admission is $10.
