Maria Guzman, a seventh-grader at Desert Springs Middle School, was awarded the grand prize in the National Philanthropy Day Student Art Contest.
Maria was selected from more than 50 submissions from sixth- to eighth-grade students at Nellie Coffman, James Workman and Desert Springs middle schools.
The contest was put on by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, Desert Communities chapter.
The organization awarded a $500 prize to Desert Springs Middle School that will be used to purchase art supplies, according to Maria's teacher Karl Koch.
