Cyclist killed by city water vehicle

Colin Atagi • The Desert Sun • October 28, 2009

An Indio man riding a bicycle was killed Tuesday after colliding with a city water tender, officials said.

The Indio Public Works vehicle was northbound on Jackson Street just before 3:30 p.m., when the collision occurred at Avenue 45, Indio police spokesman Ben Guitron said.

Robert Escovedo, 41, died at the scene, according to the Riverside County coroner's office.

The city vehicle was turning right onto Avenue 45 at the time of the collision, but investigators did not know where Escovedo came from.

“Based on witness statements, the bike pulled into the path of the vehicle,” Guitron said.

Officials do not think alcohol, drugs or speed were factors.

“The vehicle is a very large vehicle, and as it's descending down the (Jackson) bridge at the intersection, it's kinda hard for him to stop abruptly,” Guitron said.

He added the driver was “shaken up” after the collision and was put on a leave of absence from work to recover.

Mark Wasserman, assistant to City Manager Glenn Southard, did not have details on the employee's status Tuesday afternoon.

The collision remains under investigation.
