Coach: Blackhawks can't rest on laurels

Bill Byron • La Quinta Sun • October 29, 2009

The La Quinta High football team is in the midst of the easy part of its schedule.

Manhandling Cathedral City last week 56-14 and hosting a depleted Indio team Friday that lost to Palm Springs last week 48-8, the Blackhawks need to be careful of complacency.

Head coach Dan Armstrong spoke with the La Quinta Sun this week about the team.

Question: So what are you working on this week?

Answer: We're working on not overlooking Indio. They were a very good team last year. They're a little down this year, but anything can happen on any given Friday.

What does Indio do that concerns you?

They've got a lot of different sets, and you have to pick who's eligible and who's not, so we've been working on identifying those looks.

Was last week against Cathedral City as easy as it looked?

Cathedral City is in the same boat (as Indio). They're a young team, and they're struggling. We had a tremendous advantage in size. Palm Desert is probably closest to match up with us size-wise.

How's your quarterback, Andrew Jones doing?

Jones is getting better every week. San Jose State and some other schools have called.

Like what other schools?

He's got some real good film — Sacramento State, Utah State and Army. Boise State called about him playing safety.

He really doesn't throw all that much, though, does he?

He doesn't throw that much, and that hurts him, but he's got good escapeability, he's got a strong arm, and you can't coach 6-3, 215 pounds. He's plenty good enough to play in Division I. We've had players before go, and he has that kind of ability.
