Blackhawks breeze past Aztecs, Rajahs

Volleyball team bumps rivals out of the way

The La Quinta High volleyball team is continuing to roll along, beating rival Palm Desert and Indio last week.

“We probably played the best we've ever played (Oct. 20), which was great to do against Palm Desert,” Blackhawks head coach Ronda Sommaripa said. “It's always a big rivalry with them, and the girls were really excited and played their hearts out.”

La Quinta had to come back from a one-game deficit to beat the Aztecs in four.

“We lost our first game 28-26, and in the second game we were behind by nine, and I called a timeout, and I said, ‘OK guys.' It was a pretty crucial timeout, and from there we ran toward the right goals,” Sommaripa said. “We won the next three games — all of our pistons were firing, and all of our key players were really on.”

Junior Simone Henderson led the way with 19 kills.

“She blocked like crazy and was just on her game,” Sommaripa said. “It was the best game she's had this season for sure; she definitely played up for the huge crowd.”

Last week's victories improved the Blackhawks to 10-4 and 5-1 in the Desert Valley League.

They host Coachella Valley tonight at 5:30.
