Firebird girls' runners win Majestic League

Marywood-Palm Valley's girls' cross country team won its second consecutive Majestic League title with a team score of 25 points on Thursday at Calvary Chapel Moreno Valley.


The Firebirds were led by Alexia Velarde's first-place finish with a time of 18 minutes, 38 seconds. She won league MVP.

Other finishers for the Firebirds included Zoe Smith in third (21:42), Lauren Dougherty fourth (22:56), Korina Tolbert ninth (27:28), Lia Maresca 12th (30:31), Freya Craig 13th (30:32) and Isis Milanovich 14th (30:35).

Marywood-Palm Valley runs in the CIF first round at Mt. San Antonio College on Nov. 14.

INDIO ALUMNI RUN: At the sixth annual Alumni Run at Indio High School, Melina Hernandez was the outright winner with a course record of 18:14 over the 3-mile course.

The males won 20-42, taking the second through seventh places. Jerry Sanchez from COD was the top male finisher. He was followed by five Indio High runners: Brandon Chavez (16:25), Alejandro Cortez (16:26), Javier Carrillo (17:08), Ignacio Flores (17:16) and Gabriel Cortez (17:29).

The top runners for the females were Celia Tavarez (20:59), Maritza Espinoza (21:52), Gabby Hernandez- (21:55), Solana Osuna (22:06) and Jessica Salomon (22:52).

Indio will compete in the DVL Finals at Cathedral City on Wednesday.
