Palm Springs officially rules pool

LA QUINTA — Palm Springs High School clinched its first Desert Valley League boys' water polo title in school history, beating La Quinta 14-7 on Tuesday.

“This is a historical season for us,” Palm Springs coach Avi Schneller said. “This is the first time that Palm Springs has ever beaten Palm Desert in water polo, and we did it twice. It's the first time we won the DVL championship. We are looking forward to CIF.”

The Indians, ranked seventh in Division V, improved to 21-6 overall and 9-0 in DVL. They finish the regular season Thursday at Cathedral City.

Wyatt Woodward led the Indians with eight goals. Tim Breitfeller scored three goals, with P.J. Redmon adding two goals and Preston Young one.

Palm Springs goalie Turner Anderson had 13 saves.

The Indians played without four starters, including three who missed the game for their involvement in a fight during the final 17 seconds of a match last week against Palm Desert.

“That made the game in the beginning a lot closer than you would expect, but it was good for us because it forced our guys to deal with a little frustration, which we haven't had for quite a while now,” Schneller said.

Palm Desert 24, Indio 0: Twelve different Aztecs scored in this victory. Palm Desert (5-2) had three goals each from Mykolas Marcinkevicius, Mitch Pilgrim, Josh Helmstadter and John McCormick. Scoring twice were Tom O'Meara, Terry Zikov, Jeff Hurley and Austin Corbett, while Tim Hurley, Trevor Walker, Mark Pruett and Bryce Griffith each scored once. Chris Poe had four saves, Kyle Durst two saves and Garison Covel one save.
