'CSI' actors join judges for Miss California

City News Service • November 5, 2009

Actors A.J. Buckley and Hill Harper from “CSI: NY” will be among the 11 judges at the Miss California USA pageant, it was announced Wednesday.

The pageant will be held Nov. 22 at The Show at the Agua Caliente Resort and Spa in Rancho Mirage.

Buckley, who plays lab-technician Adam Ross on the show, and Harper, who plays reclusive coroner Sheldon Hawks, will work with fellow judges Claudia Jordan, who won the Miss Rhode Island title in 1990 and appeared on “Celebrity Apprentice”; Frank Ryan, a Beverly Hills plastic surgeon; Francine Champagne, owner of Vision Models; and Kelly Monaco, who plays Sam McCall on “General Hospital.”

Bevy of judges

Other judges will be Randall Slavin, a celebrity photographer; Tiffany Fallon, who was Miss Georgia USA in 2001; Shandi Finnessey, who has appeared on “Celebrity Apprentice” and “Dancing with the Stars”; Tony Bowls, a fashion designer; and David Fendrick, chief operating officer of the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians.

The final 10 contestants from the initial field of 150 will wear styles by Bowls in an attempt to make the pageant more like a fashion show.

The pageant winner will advance to the Miss USA pageant, the winner of which competes in the Miss Universe pageant.

Crowning slated

Miss California USA Tami Farrell — who replaced Carrie Prejean when she was stripped of her title in June for allegedly missing scheduled appearances and showing up for ones that were not approved by pageant officials — will also be ceremonially crowned at the event.

Farrell was never formally crowned because she stepped in for Prejean late in the year, according to Heather Witbeck, a pageant spokeswoman.

Prejean filed a lawsuit in August against pageant officials, alleging she was stripped of her crown because of her religious beliefs, which include opposition to same-sex marriage.

Prejean responded to a question at the Miss USA pageant from celebrity blogger and pageant judge Perez Hilton about same-sex marriage and said she believed marriage should only be between a man and a woman.
