The La Quinta High football team is coming off another easy victory, beating Indio 42-0 last week.
This week the Blackhawks travel to Thermal to take on Coachella Valley.
Head coach Dan Armstrong spoke to the La Quinta Sun this week about the match-ups and his team.
Question: There seems to be a huge gap in the Desert Valley League between the haves and the have-nots. What kind of affect does that have on the league?
Answer: It didn't used to be like that, there was a time when Cat City was the team to beat — just a few years ago. This year, it seems to be like that, but I think it just depends on the season.
I thought CV might be a sleeper, but after they lost to Palm Springs badly, I would think you guys should handle them easily.
They didn't have their (running) back (Oliver Inzunza), which hurt them from a morale aspect. I think their biggest improvement is their defense; they run to the ball better and are more aggressive. And we're averaging close to 400 yards on offense, so I'd like to think we'll keep that up.
I don't think you can complain about much in your shutout victory over Indio can you?
Well, we had opportunities that we didn't capitalize on, we made some mistakes. They forced us to a couple of three-and-outs, and we don't like to punt. But I was pleased with our defense.
What's your strategy against CV this week?
We're not doing anything new. We need to get better every week. I'd like to throw the ball a little more, with just straight dropback plays, not play-action.
Is that to help your quarterback, Andrew Jones, get more attention from college scouts?
That won't matter, they've already seen what he can do. It's hard to throw when you've got three good backs, and when you get leads, you don't want to throw, so that's hurt him quite a bit. But I just sent out tape (Monday) to Utah State and Northern Arizona.
