Girls golf

Wiebe qualifies La Quinta High School golfer Natascha Wiebe carded a 79 at the CIF Southern Individual Regional Tournament at Landmark in Hemet on Monday.

The next girls golf event is the Eastern team divisional today at Seven Hills in Hemet.

Santos disqualified In the end, Raychelle Santos of La Quinta and Kimmy Hill of Palm Desert hugged each other, Santos in tears and Hill in sympathy at the conclusion of a strange Desert Valley League girls individual golf championship.

Hill, a sophomore at Palm Desert, won the league title, but only after a roller-coaster half- hour that saw Santos apparently tie Hill for the title, then apparently winning the title outright, then being disqualified for signing an incorrect scorecard.

“It's sad that she lost, but I worked hard,” Hill said after being declared the winner with a 27-hole total of 4-over 112.

Santos, the defending co- champion of the league, also apparently finished with a 74 on Thursday and a 112 total. That's what Santos, a sophomore for the Blackhawks, signed for on her scorecard.

Santos signed for a front nine of 38 and a back nine of 36 for a total of 74. But the individual scores on her back nine added up to 35, not 36, meaning her score appeared to be 73, not 74.

The tournament committee, in this case the coaches of host school Coachella Valley, talked to the three players in the last group about the discrepancy and then decided to invoke Rule 6-6d, which notes that the committee can correct a nine-hole score, but not the score on individual holes. That would mean the committee could give Santos a 35 on the back nine — the score that her nine holes added up to — and a 73 for the round. And that seemed to give Santos a one-shot victory against Hill.

But in continuing to talk about the scoring, Santos realized that she had signed for a par 4 on the 14th hole, where she actually took a bogey 5.
