Sweet potatoes or yam? Grab some of each at weekly market

Palm Springs Sun • November 6, 2009

If you enjoy sweet potatoes, there's no guarantee you will like yams — or vice versa.

Both are available for purchase this Saturday at the Palm Springs Certified Farmers Market, but they are not the same vegetable.

Sweet potatoes are a part of the potato family and are covered with a light-yellow skin or orange to reddish skin.

Yams, which are sweeter than sweet potatoes, have brown skin and resemble tree bark.

Cost: $1.50 per pound and higher.

The market, which is sponsored by the Palm Springs Cultural Center, takes place 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. every Saturday in the Palm Springs Mall parking lot adjacent to Camelot Theatres, 2300 E. Baristo Road at Farrell Drive.

Did you know: Yams are harvested when they're young, about the size of sweet potatoes, in the United States. But they can grow to more than 7 feet long.
