Rose fans are in for a treat next weekend.
First, the national American Rose Society will have its Fall Rose Show in Cathedral City.
Second, the show will preview two roses specially bred for the Coachella Valley.
“This is the first time the national event, which is part of the American Rose Society's fall conference, will be held here,” says Desert Rose Society vice president Sharon Moore.
“It's the first time in more than 60 years that the show has been in the Pacific Southwest.”
More than 500 attendees are expected, she said.
The show will exhibit horticultural and arrangement classes plus an international rose photography show with roses and Rosarians from around the globe.
In honor of the event, Jackson and Perkins has bred a floribunda rose and named it Coachella. It produces large clusters of ruffled, almost old-fashioned blossoms of 25 to 30 petals in a soft pink with a white reverse, has a strong licorice scent and will grow to 4 feet tall. The Coachella will be available in limited quantities during the show, after which it will be removed from commerce.
A second new rose, named P.S. I Love You, will be available at the show. Developed by Cliff Orent, past present of the Desert Rose Society and owner of EuroDesert Roses in Morongo Valley, the flower already won Best Seedling at the American Rose Society's National Show in Denver, Colo., in 2008.
The new rose is a hybrid musk that produces large clusters of white semi-double blossoms with a strong fragrance, Moore said.
