The gunman who shot two co-workers — killing one — before killing himself last week at Luxury Rent-a-Car in Cathedral City has been identified as the 53-year-old president of the business, authorities said Monday.
Seyed Sajasi of Palm Desert killed Northridge resident Joe N. Khachigian, 49, with a 9mm pistol inside the car rental showroom at 68-350 E. Palm Canyon Drive, police said.
A second victim, Setrak “Steve” Balabanian, 44, of Los Angeles is being treated at Desert Regional Medical Center for critical injuries after being shot twice, police said.
Police are still trying to determine a motive for the shootings, which occurred Oct. 29. Cathedral City police Lt. Glen Haas said that “on the surface” it appeared to be connected to a business dispute.
The three men — along with another business partner who was not injured and called police after the shooting — were meeting at the business Thursday morning, according to police.
Sajasi left the meeting to retrieve a gun from another room and returned to shoot his colleagues, police said.
Investigators on Monday released surveillance photos and the 911 tape from the shooting.
In the recording, the fourth business partner identifies himself as “Vaz” to a dispatcher and describes the scene immediately after the shooting.
“We were having a business discussion. Partners, one of my partners, he shot two of my cousins and he shot himself in front of me,” he said in the 911 call.
“He shot himself. (The gun's) on the floor. I can't even walk. There's blood everywhere.”
A woman who identified herself as Khachigian's sister-in-law was reached by telephone Monday but declined to comment.
Miguel Hurtado, owner of La Tablita restaurant across the street, said the business owners came into his restaurant regularly but he could not identify them by name.
Hurtado described the two men as generous spenders and well-dressed men.
“I suspect whatever happened had to do with money because they have cars that rent for $400 per day.
“Who is going to rent those cars in this economy? And their traffic was very low,” Hurtado said.
Haas said detectives were researching the history of the gun used in the incident to determine its origin.
Desert Sun reporter Colin Atagi contributed to this report.
