Boys finish first in all three Desert Valley League cross country meets

The Indio High boys cross country team had a perfect Desert Valley League season this year, finishing first in all three league meets to win the championship.

There were no real surprises in the final DVL boys cross country meet Wednesday, with Indio easily running away with the championship and the race.

The Rajahs' Chris Sanchez won the race which helped give Indio the overall No. 1 spot in the final standings.

“Cat City's been coming on and improving, but we've been just a little bit better,” Indio head coach Becky Baker said. “Our 5, 6 and 7 runners are good for us, Cathedral City drops off after their No. 4 and that makes a difference.”

Joining the Rajahs in the postseason will be Cathedral City and La Quinta.

The Lions and Blackhawks finished second and third respectively at all three meets.

Sanchez won Wednesday's meet in 16 minutes, 30 seconds, just seven seconds ahead of second-place Ricardo Nevarez of Cathedral City. It's the second race in a row the pair have finished one-two.

“It was pretty close, I didn't really feel good — I had a stomach cramp, and I fell on the first sharp turn and hurt my hand,” Sanchez said. “I led the whole race, but in the last stretch around the corner, (Nevarez) got close so I ran pretty fast on that last stretch.”

Sanchez finished three seconds ahead of Nevarez in the last DVL race and that was after he got lost on the course. He has yet to win a DVL meet without having some sort of mishap during the race.

The Rajahs, Lions and Blackhawks will all head to Mt. SAC Nov. 14 for the first round of the CIF postseason.
