PALM DESERT — The top girls' tennis seeds in the Desert Valley League lived up to their rank, as the favorites won the league's individual tournament held Thursday at Palm Valley Country Club.
Palm Desert's Desirae Krawczyck won the singles title, downing La Quinta's Megan Lester 6-0, 6-2 in the final. Both will advance to the CIF individual sectional Nov. 20.
The top two doubles teams, both from Palm Desert, also advanced. The team of Morgan McIntosh and Lauren Marker defeated Haley Perrote and Jordan Eggleston in the doubles final 6-4, 6-4.
“I felt very confident, I played a good match,” Krawczyk said. “Toward the end, (Lester) moved me around a little bit when she won a couple of games.”
Lester improved as the match progressed, staving off a match point and taking Krawczyk to several deuces, but she was unable to break Krawczyk in the match.
“I didn't play well in the first set, I was nervous and didn't have a lot of energy. I didn't get over that until half-way through the second set,” Lester said. “If I would have played the rest of the match the way I played at the end, it might have been different.”
Lester went to the postseason in doubles two years ago and made it to the round of 16.
“I think she has a good shot, she certainly has the talent level to win some matches, but it's all about the draw,” La Quinta head coach Michael Gates said about Lester's chances in the postseason individual tournament.
McIntosh and Marker beat fellow Aztecs Perrotte and Eggleston in a hotly contested final.
“It was a tough match, me and (Marker) have never played (Perrotte-Eggleston) before,” McIntosh, a senior, said. “It's different (playing your teammates) because there's some tension, but I looked at it as just another tennis match.”
McIntosh's doubles team lost in the quarterfinals of last year's individual sectionals, but she hopes to improve upon that performance this time around.
McIntosh and Marker beat the Palm Springs team of Paulina Sussman-Hannah Erickson 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals and Perrotte and Eggleston took care of Katherine Dickerson-Sandra Balatkova of La Quinta 6-4, 6-0 to advance to the final round.
“That doubles final definitely could have gone either way. It was extremely close and hard fought, with long points,” Palm Desert head coach Caerwyn Evans said. “I'd like to believe (Krawczyk) will go quite a bit farther this year at CIF.”
Last season the Palm Desert sophomore lost in the second round of the individual sectional tournament.
The CIF Individual Sectional tournament will be Nov. 20 at a site to be determined, most likely the Claremont Country Club.
