Indians finish perfect in DVL

Patti Myers • The Desert Sun • November 6, 2009

CATHEDRAL CITY — Three down, one to go.

The Palm Springs High School volleyball team set three team goals for the season and have accomplished all three. So, they decided to add one more.

“We want to make it farther than we did in CIF last year,” said senior Haley Westergard. “We need to take it one game at a time, work on finishing strong in every game and keep pushing hard.”

The Indians pushed all the way to the top, completing an unbeaten season in capturing the Desert Valley League title. On Thursday night against Cathedral City, the Indians earned a 25-11, 25-17, 25-15 triumph.

That completed two of their goals — the unbeaten season and DVL title. The other?

“No drama,” said Indians coach Gary Wilhoite, whose squad posted a perfect campaign at 15-0, 10-0 DVL. “To stay focused without drama, win DVL and finish undefeated were the three, but beyond those goals we want to get further than last year. And we're on track.”

With the final regular season game in the books, the Indians, along with La Quinta and Palm Desert who tied for second, have reached the playoffs.

The CIF volleyball pairings will be announced Sunday afternoon.

Cathedral City (7-6, 4-6) has an outside shot of getting in based on its overall record and strength of league.

Both Westergard and fellow senior Mindy Knight were at a loss for words following the final league match played in front of a near-capacity crowd.

“What we've done is really indescribable,” said Westergard, who finished with 20 assists Thursday. “You work so hard and to achieve it is unbelievable. We knew this was going to be an intense game and Cathedral City brought a great crowd, but we brought just as much back at it. We pulled away with our strength.”

Knight agreed.

“You can't even describe the feeling we have,” said Knight, who posted four blocks. “We're excited, we're sad, we're ecstatic. They (Lions) just kept rallying. They played a really good game.”

Although Palm Springs was in command early behind Ciara Richards, Jennifer Iacobini (seven kills) and Sarah Webster, the Indians didn't really roll out until midway through Game 1 on Westergard and London Chow's late serving.

In Game 2, the Lions led early before the game was tied at three times with big plays at the net from Makenzie Lundquist and Scarlett Collett, two-way standout play from Bethanee Boggs along with solid setting from Katy Knutson. However, after Iacobini served at 11-10 and Webster kept coming up big in the middle, the Indians never looked back despite some long rallies.

In Game 3, Palm Springs never trailed and got a big spark off the bench from Sarah Lake and Lexi Dempsey, who put the game out of reach when she served six consecutive points for the 12-4 cushion.

Chloe Yoder (17 digs), Webster (seven skills) and Holly Anthony turned in a strong effort for the Indians. Jackie Lopez and Nina Rogers also contributed with solid play down the stretch.
