Trojan mascot in valley The USC mascot, Traveler the horse, will be in the desert Wednesday as part of a scholarship fundraiser luncheon hosted by the Trojan League Associates of the Desert.
The Trojan Marching Band will play several tunes, and the keynote speaker will be band director Art Bartner.
All proceeds will benefit the 12 USC students who have scholarships from the League, including former Cathedral City High student Stephanie Daniels.
Space is still available for the luncheon, which begins at 10:30 a.m. at Desert Island Golf and Country Club in Rancho Mirage. The cost is $90 per person.

Girls tennis
CATHEDRAL CITY 9, PALM SPRINGS 9: The Lions defeated the Indians by way of a 68-64 advantage in games Oct. 29. Earning singles victories for Cathedral City was Joanne Esteban (6-0, 6-0, 6-1).
In doubles, the teams of Andrea Sanchez and Tamara Reparjeo (6-2, 6-2) Kim O'Bannon and Brenda Magana (6-3, 6-1) won.
Cathedral City concludes its season with a 5-5 record in the Desert Valley League.
Boys water polo
Palm desert 17, cathedral city 10: John McCormick scored six goals to lead the Aztecs over the Lions Oct. 29.
Terry Zikov and Jeff Hurley had three goals apiece while Mitch Pilgrim added two goals.
Austin Corbett, Mykolas Marcinkevicius and Trevor Walker also scored. Garison Covel had 10 saves and one steal. Kyle Durst (one save and a steal) and Chris Poe (one save) also contributed for Palm Desert.
Girls tennis
La Quinta 13, Cathedral City 5: Host La Quinta improved to 14-4 overall and 8-1 in the Desert Valley League with the Oct. 27 victory.
Singles winners for the Blackhawks included Tatum Kantor (6-0), Efraa El Hendy (6-3), Fawn Lawson (6-3), Elizabeth Sowe (6-1) and Megan Lester (6-0).
In doubles, Katherine Dickerson and Sandra Balatkova teamed to win 6-0, 6-0. Whitney Denwiler and Ana Alsarbi won 6-0, 7-6. Danielle Hunter and Bryana Pitt won 6-4, 6-2, 6-4. Jenni Coble and Sam Pimental won 6-3.
