CARSON — The Marywood-Palm Valley High School football team ended its season in style Friday inside the complex of the Home Depot Center, defeating Pacific Lutheran 34-32 on a last-second play.
Down 32-26 with 1:45 remaining, the Firebirds (4-4, 2-2) drove down and faced a fourth-down play with nine seconds to go on Pacific Lutheran's 18-yard line. Quarterback Blake Downey ran the ball into the end zone as time expired to set up a potential game-winning 2-point conversion.
On the ensuing play, the Firebirds ran an option as Keaton Herrera crossed the goal line for the victory. It was the final game for Marywood-Palm Valley's five seniors.
“I'm so proud of our seniors,” Firebirds head coach Vince Downey said. “They're a great group of kids and hard workers, and it was a nice way to go out. I'm proud of the whole team.”
Herrera had 52 rushing yards and a 75-yard kickoff return for a touchdown. Downey rushed for 175 yards on 12 carries with three touchdowns. Receiver Trevor Zien had four receptions for 99 yards and a touchdown.
Defensively, Herrera had 12 tackles and an interception, while Alwyn Kalapuracan added an interception.
