Ballard gets candid about past, future

An intimate Q&A luncheon between noted celebrity interviewer Gloria Greer and singer, songwriter, actress and local resident Kaye Ballard took place at a recent Palm Springs Women in Film meeting at La Quinta Resort.

Ballard delighted her audience with stories about her longtime association with Desi Arnaz (producer and co-star of “I Love Lucy”), whom she called a genius.

Ballard charmingly credited her long career to “learning to live with rejection.”

Her list of famous names that she “worshiped” included Julia Child, Ethel Merman and Judy Garland.

About living in the desert, Ballard said, “God sent me here, it's the most perfect place in the world.”

Still looking ahead, Ballard talked about a script about her grandmother she has written and hopes to get produced titled, “Over the River.”

In response to one question Ballard said, “bad, bad, bad, bad,” prompting an audience member to observe, “it sounds like you have dogs,” to which Ballard responded by launching into stories about her four dogs.

The audience was delighted at Ballard's sense of humor and quick comebacks to questions — and this is not an easy audience.

In attendance at this meeting was Fern Field (co-exec producer of the television series “Monk”) and Jean Lee Porter (author of “The Stone Must Break”).

Emcee of the event was Sherry Halperin, a film producer and PSWIFT board member.
