La Quinta High girls' soccer team on top in DVL league play

The La Quinta High girls' soccer team is sitting alone in first place of the Desert Valley League this week.

Following surprising losses by Palm Springs and Palm Desert, both the Indians and the Aztecs each had two losses entering the week, while the Blackhawks began the week a perfect 5-0 in league play.

“I'm not counting on anything yet,” La Quinta head coach Bob Quattlebaum said. “We were in the same situation last year, I think we were 4-1, we beat Palm Springs both times last year, but we had a tough time against Cat City. They beat us, and we split with Palm Desert.

“Right now, anybody can beat anybody in the DVL,” Quattlebaum added.

The Blackhawks' leading scorers continue to be their two senior forwards, Lisette Barriga — 12 goals and six assists — and Celia Williams — 11 goals and seven assists.

“They both work real hard on the field. They seem to really come together and are working hard together,” Quattlebaum said.

“On the field together, they're looking for each other. They're almost at the point where they don't have to talk anymore.”

Tonight, the Blackhawks host a struggling Indio team, but Quattlebaum won't underestimate the Rajahs.

“They're playing really well,” he said. “I watched them play last Friday against Palm Springs, and Palm Springs gave everything they could to handle them.”

La Quinta will be hoping Palm Springs doesn't have enough to handle them either, as the two squads face off in a makeup game on Friday at Palm Springs.

All games this week start at 5 p.m.
