Monday morning quarterbacking for Super Bowl ads

Nicole C. Brambila • The Desert Sun • February 8, 2010

As the Saints beat the Colts 31-17 in Sunday's Super Bowl, Betty White finished second to the Bud Light's beer-can house in the annual Super Bowl AdMeter.

Since 1989, the USA Today AdMeter has rated the best and worst of Super Bowl commercials.

The controversial anti-abortion ad featuring 2007 Heisman winner Tim Tebow and his mother, who talked about a doctor advising her to consider having an abortion, came in third.

It ain't easy to sell a light beer when the public nicknamed the premium label, ‘Colorado Kool-Aid.'

But Chicago advertising executive Bill Daniel had a different pitch, and he took it to the showcase for commercials: the Super Bowl.

The Silver Bullet didn't describe a light beer. It was all about the can.

“I told them, ‘Don't try to sell a light beer. Give it a bar call,'” said Daniel, who semi-retired three years ago and moved to Palm Springs.

Daniel also has done Super Bowl spots for Bud Light, Michelob and King Cobra.

In his more than 40 years in the business, Daniel has worked with Allstate, KFC, BMW and the Tiger Woods Foundation as well as creating Reebok's “Basketball Legends” campaign, called by Advertising Age “the single most memorable basketball shoe commercial of all times.”

He co-owned Equinox Advertising, later Washington Daniel, from 1986-2002.

The pitchman watched the New Orleans Saints make franchise history with their 31-17 win over the favored Indianapolis Colts, and he took in a few commercials. We paired his reactions with USA Today's Ad Meter rankings (out of five stars) and some reactions from other experts.

Snickers with Betty White

Daniels: "She's a great spokesperson because she's thought of as a very energetic person. Betty White is just a funny lady."

AdMeter: Guy plays football like Betty White - 4 stars

Reaction: "'You're not you when you're hungry.' You might play football like Betty White, who sassed her way through a wacky spot with Abe Vigoda. You can't beat nostalgia on TV's biggest day," said Hal Boedeker, of The Orlando Sentinel.

Dove For Men

Daniels: "It went around the barn to make their point."

AdMeter: Tells the story of boy growing into a man and the signal events in a man's life - 1 star

Reaction: A winner because it managed to entertain while telling people about the brand. "So far from what I've seen I'm quite positively impressed, more than I thought I would be," said Villanova marketing Professor Charles R. Taylor.

Boost Mobile

Daniels: "I think it's very important for people who were not thought of as hi-tech to come along and say, 'You can be part of the technology.' The kids will think it's old school."

AdMeter: Nostalgia for the "Super Bowl Shuffle" - 1 star

Reaction: Taylor said the ad by Boost Mobile, Sprint's prepaid cellular phone service, didn't work because it depended too heavily on the 1985 Chicago Bears' "Super Bowl Shuffle," a reference that could be too old for the brand's buyers.

Bud Light

Daniels: "The Bud Light stuff, I thought, was great humor. Bud Light knows their audience."

AdMeter: Asteroid threat - 3 stars; House of beer cans - 3 stars; Friends' voices change - 3 stars

Reaction: "In a loopy spoof of 'Lost,' a woman says she's found the plane's radio equipment. Well, forget that. Crash survivors would rather enjoy Bud Light and listen to music than be rescued," Boedeker said.

Doritos

Daniels: "It's just not creative."

AdMeter: Owner shock collar - 5 stars; Kid scolds mom's boyfriend - 5 stars; Man fills casket with chips - 1 star

Reaction: "A man dates a single mom, but her young son isn't impressed and slaps the man. 'Keep your hands off my mama and keep your hands off my Doritos,' the child says. Smart kid, smart ad," Boedeker said.

FLO TV

Daniels: "It was almost like a great history lesson in a short time and it talks about, 'Where will you be?' If I'm a young person, I'd be thinking I have a lot to look forward to."

AdMeter: Jim Nantz reports on a terrible injury, a woman removes a man's spine - 1 star

Reaction: No reactions reported.
