The windstorm last Saturday that wreaked havoc around town was a nightmare for people who clean pools. Along with dirt and sand, they removed tree limbs and palm fronds, chairs and umbrellas, and anything not tied down. Joe Goff has cleaned and serviced pools in Palm Springs for 29 years and has been working overtime all week. (Joe’s Pool Service, (760) 251-1727)

Is this the worst storm you've seen?

We have had worse storms, lots of them. Trees flying through the air like kites. Saturday's windstorm was intense but short in duration. We have had storms that lasted for days. You clean up once and the wind blows again and again. And you clean up over and over.

How do you begin to clean a pool after a storm like this?

Start with what's floating on top. Brush the sides of the pool to move the dirt down. Work your way to the bottom and start scooping up with a net or a vacuum.

What is a homeowner to do?

Get to work with a net, a brush, a skimmer and a porta- vacuum, which could cost hundreds dollars if you don't already have it or call a pool guy. Some pool guys will clean up for a one-time charge.

What are the pros and cons of a pool service business?

I meet a lot of people. I am my own boss. The work is consistent and you alone answer to the customer. However, there is not a lot of time off for vacations, and it is not a high income-producing job.

Are wind storms the worst thing a pool man has to deal with?

No. Finding a dead person in a pool. A lot of people swim alone it happens. But it has not happened to me yet.
