Letter: Cattle grazing is causing damage

I am, sadly, amazed at the inconsistencies demonstrated by the Bureau of Land Management.

While the BLM tries to prevent many from enjoying the top of the Bump and Grind Trail, it has approved cattle grazing rights to a vast area above the Whitewater Preserve.

The Pacific Crest Trail traverses this area and has been seriously damaged in just one year by grazing cattle. I have hiked this trail for more than 10 years and more damage has occurred in just one year than in 10 previous years.

The area has sparse grass and no water, so I can't imagine that grazing cattle there is very important. Yet they allow this while trying to ban people from other areas with little or no scientific evidence of any harm to bighorn sheep.

The need to seriously re-evaluate their priorities. So far, their stewardship of our public lands leaves much to be desired. If you are a Pacific Coast Trail hiker, you should be very angry.
