Food trucks — which combine gourmet and street food into a unique and tasty cuisine — rolled into Palm Springs last weekend for the first festival of its kind in the Coachella Valley.
Speaking of signature events, the Tour de Palm Springs is likely under way as you read this today.
Tonight is a special night for the Desert AIDS Project, those it serves and those who help to keep it funded.
I read that a new no-right-turn sign to be visible from the signal light standard will take months to install.
Prominent neoconservative John R. Bolton and others intend to return to power by endorsing moderate Republican flip-flopper Willard Mitt Romney for president.
The Desert Sun admires the elected officials who serve on the myriad boards that lead our public agencies.
A vital part of a soldier's gear, along with his fighting equipment, is his personal belongings. These possessions are central to the maintenance of his daily existence. And so this story of the Army-issued duffel bag unfolds. It followed this soldier over two continents, staying close to him for some 50 years.
I was delighted to read the new USDA guidelines requiring schools to serve meals with twice as many fruits and vegetables, more whole grains, less sodium and fat, and no meat for breakfast. The guidelines were mandated by the Healthy Hunger-Free Kids Act signed by President Obama in December of 2010 and will go into effect with the next school year.
Love, love, love Indio's new logo! Way to go. It is really creative, fun and inspiring, just like Indio.
Let's hope Palm Desert doesn't drown from Mayor Pro Tem Bill Kroonen's deciding vote for J.W. Marriott Desert Springs' water park. I, like the majority of your poll responders, say no to using transient occupancy taxes to help hotels improve their property.
If kids can't get to school, they won't learn much. California Gov. Jerry Brown seems to have forgotten this, moving to end state funding for school buses.
Support of children's theater and exposure to the arts has often been seen as an educational luxury. The time has come for it to be viewed as an essential part of the American education experience.
Hard to believe that the Ford family authorized their dog's headstone inscription to read: “Liberty: Truly golden lady for our family — the Ford's.” For those of us who are apostrophe police, this is an horrendous error!
Kudos to the city of Indio! I recently emailed City Manager Dan Martinez and the new police Chief Richard Twiss about the increased graffiti in my neighborhood. Within 48 hours I had heard from two city employees, including the chief of police himself. There was acknowledgement on the issue and I felt sincere intentions to address the problem. I am excited to see the new direction the city is going.
Leftist columnist E.J. Dionne Jr. forgot to mention in his Monday column the tens of millions of dollars that labor unions poured into local, state and federal elections to buy elected officials prior to the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision. Not once did he mention the contributions and influence of unions in his column.

The Desert Sun hopes Tuesday's ruling upholding a lower court decision that Proposition 8's prohibition against same-sex marriage is unconstitutional will propel the issue to the U.S. Supreme Court.
As a reporter who covered the Proposition 8 trial, I was not surprised by Tuesday's court victory upholding same-sex marriage in California. In fact, no one who has been paying attention to the public opinion polls on gay rights should be surprised.
Let's skip the noise situation for a second. So a fighter jet coming into Palm Springs airport from nearby Miramar cost taxpayers $4,263 in fuel.

How and when did it become so popular to rag on the rich? Are they really the incarnation of all evil as their uber-envious detractors claim? Are they Robin Hood in reverse?
JCM's lawsuit against the balloonists was ridiculous from the beginning and it caused some balloon companies to go out of business.
I would vote for any of the candidates except Barack Obama. I consider Obama the worst president in the history of this wonderful country that I fought for in World War II.
I am amazed at the number of letters favoring President Obama. If this is indeed representative of thinking in this valley and elsewhere, the country is doomed.

I enjoyed Kathy Strong's recent column on Coronado, which is a great getaway for desert residents. I was delighted to read she mentioned one of my secret and favorite places, the 1906 Lodge. This little gem in Coronado offers up the true meaning of hospitality with their spacious suites, attentive staff and gourmet breakfasts. I guess my little secret is no more.
