ShortFest draws big crowd as it opens 7-day run

The Palm Springs International ShortFest embarked Tuesday on what Executive Director Darryl Macdonald called a 'week-long voyage of discovery' with an overflow number of passengers.
'Mr. Invisible' and 'Can I Smoke' can both be seen at the Palm Springs Shortfest on Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m., respectively.
ShortFest usually assembles separate packages of films about gays and lesbians. It's doing that this year on Thursday before the annual Gay!La party at Hunter's in Palm Springs. But, as an experiment, it's also trying to aggregate those audiences in the program, 'LGBT — Like Me' at 5 p.m. today.
NYU film student Mauricio Osaki learned a tough lesson about the movie industry this month when he showcased his short film at the Directors Guild of America in Los Angeles.
The highly regarded Palm Springs International ShortFest will launch next Tuesday with an opening night package that only wants to make you laugh.
The Cannes Film Festival is the sine qua non (or, if you will, the cine qua non) that sets the agenda for other global film festivals. It not only celebrates cinema as art, but it serves as a handmaiden to film as business.
